Церемония вручения 72-й премии состоялась в необычном формате из-за коронавируса. Онлайн-трансляцию шоу вел телеведущий Джимми Киммел.

В США состоялась церемония награждения премией Эмми. Онлайн-трансляция 72-й премии состоялась на странице Американской телеакадемии в Twitter.

Организаторы мероприятия объявили лауреатов в основных категориях. Так, лучшим комедийным сериалом признан Шиттс Крик.

Статуэтки в категориях Лучший комедийный актер и Лучшая комедийная актриса получили Кэтрин О’Хара и Юджин Леви. Они исполнили главные роли в Шиттс Крик. При этом, сын Юджина — Дэн Леви оказался лучшим актером второго плана, а также лучшим сценаристом комедийного сериала.

В категории Лучший мини-сериал наградили шоу Хранители, а Реджина Кинг получила Эмми как лучшая актриса в нем. Также сериал является рекордсменом года по числу номинаций — 26.

В категории Лучшее реалити-шоу победила программа Королевские гонки Ру Пола. Шоу Рик и Морти» получило награду в категории Лучший мультсериал.
